Pelosi Tried to Save Biden from Himself — and Knew He’d Lose to Trump

In a behind-the-scenes bombshell revealed in the new book Fight: Inside the Wildest Battle for the White House, former Speaker Nancy Pelosi reportedly urged Joe Biden not to debate Donald Trump, knowing full well he’d be humiliated on stage — and that it could doom the Democrats’ shot at 2024.

According to authors Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes, Pelosi tried to “play to [Biden’s] ego,” telling him not to “lower himself” by debating Trump. She said it would “lower the presidency” and advised him not to “roll around in the mud.” But her real motivation, as the authors suggest, was far more tactical — and brutally honest.

“If she thought Biden was going to beat Donald Trump in a debate, she would have been telling him to debate,” Allen said flatly.

Translation: Pelosi didn’t believe Biden could handle Trump — and she wasn’t alone. The book says other senior Democrats, including Obama advisor Anita Dunn, also pushed Biden to avoid the stage. But Biden, stubborn and desperate to prove he still had it, insisted on going toe-to-toe with Trump.

That choice was catastrophic. The June debate was so disastrous for Biden that Democrats panicked. The party brass — led by Pelosi — worked feverishly behind the scenes to force him out. Biden dropped out just weeks later.

Pelosi had tried to stop it all from happening, using her 40-year friendship with Biden to guide him gently off the ledge. But by the time he got humiliated on live TV, it was too late.

Jonathan Alter, in his book American Reckoning, explains how Pelosi’s nightmare wasn’t just losing the White House — it was failing to take back the House. She feared Biden’s weakness would drag down the entire ticket, and after watching the debate, she realized the Democrats were in free fall.

And she was right. After Biden bowed out, Kamala Harris stepped in and lost badly to Trump in November. What was supposed to be a seamless transition turned into a historic defeat.

Pelosi’s instinct — that Biden wasn’t up to the job — has now been validated by voters, history, and even the White House’s own internal drama. But what does it say about the Democratic Party that their top brass knew Biden was unfit, yet let him run anyway?

Instead of pulling the plug early, they played games, massaged egos, and lied to the public, all while the most powerful office in the world was on the line.

It’s a scandal in slow motion — one they hoped voters wouldn’t notice. But America saw the truth on that debate stage, and they remembered it at the ballot box.
