Criminals are often regarded as being some of the meanest and ignorant people you’ll ever come across. This theory seems to apply to carjackers more than other crimes, yet one in Oakland, CA, had a touch of good in his heart on January 23rd.
After carjacking a Dodge Charger in Oakland, the unidentified male pulled over and dropped off a 2-year-old boy at a bus stop. With nobody there, the tyke is there waiting alone until a bus pulls up roughly a minute later. Racing out, the bus driver and other bystanders swooped in to tend to the youngster as they awaited emergency services.
Getting just four miles away before he stopped, the police were able to reunite the mother and son in short order. Due to her leaving her Airpods and cell phone in the car, she was able to trace the car and report updates to the police. Marin County Sheriff Adam Schermerhorn told KGO, “The mother was able to give us continuous updates, at one point showing that the device appeared to be on Tiburon Boulevard. The security camera footage showed a male and a female exit the stolen vehicle and then leave going northbound behind the McDonald’s.”
While the decision to abandon the kid there was not the safest location, the timing of the bus would indicate that the man was likely familiar with the line. He quite probably had seen the bus was on the way to that stop and thought the minute would be ok. The brain-dead move to leave him there shows some heart. A solid sign that he didn’t want him to be at risk riding with him or his mom having to worry longer than necessary.
If he’s caught and the Oakland DA decides to try him, this should be worth some brownie points.
