Too Many Wars are Taking Too Long

Have you noticed that there are more wars happening around the world simultaneously? One war cannot even come to a close before another one pops up – and this has an incredibly negative impact on the world economy.

No one expected Russia and Ukraine’s war to still be going on. Millions have been sent from every major country to help one side or another win. It was anticipated to last for a few months. 21 months later, and money is still being spent.

Now, Israel and Palestine are at war. While it only started last month, Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel has said that the war is taking much longer than he expected.

There’s no telling how much longer it could last – especially if Hamas won’t respect the “pause” in attacks that have been requested from both sides. Israel respects the request, which has been made from the Biden administration as well as from other entities around the world. However, they will attack if they are attacked simply as a means of self-defense.

Wars are lasting longer than they used to for a number of reasons:

  1. Political leaders don’t want to show weakness.
  2. Money has already been spent, so they don’t want it to be a waste.
  3. Leaders don’t want to admit to making any mistakes.
  4. The information about the other side is often wrong.
  5. It’s a matter of pride for the countries involved.

Win or lose, war is never good.

There’s an economic shock involved – and it can be even more devastating when the wars go on for extensive periods of time.

Not only is there an expense for the various weapons used but there’s also the destruction of physical capital. At some point, a country will have to rebuild everything that has been destroyed – and in countries like Ukraine and Israel, that could be billions of dollars, at this point.

There’s also the death toll as well as those that flee the war-torn country.

Those who flee cause economic hardship on the nearby countries that they flee to.

And yet, we allow these wars to go on.

With Russia and Ukraine still fighting, there’s no telling how long the Gaza war could go on. And there are plenty of other countries preparing for war, too – including Iran, Syria, South Korea, and China.

Can the world actually handle this many wars simultaneously and going on for as long as they are?
